I got to Oxford House Enigma on Feb 1st after doing 3 months in county and 28 days in an inpatient treatment program in Holbrook. I lost contact with my mom 2 weeks before getting to Oxford and, with the help of Oxford, I found my mom in a shelter and got her into an Oxford House for women. I’m also still going to court looking at a 180 day sentence but I’ve gotten a couple character letters from the chapter officers and I might not have to go back to jail at all. Making it mandatory to be working a program Oxford has also introduced me to NA and amazing testimonies from which to learn and grow.

Yes, the prospective residents of the House can find a suitable house, rent it, put up the security deposit and pay the first month’s rent themselves. Oxford House, Inc. will consider favorably a Charter application whether or not a loan is received from the State. The application is then considered by the membership of the House and if there is a vacancy and if 80% of the members approve, the applicant is accepted and moves in. The men and women in Oxford Houses pay all the expenses to maintain the individual Oxford Houses that make up the network of more than 1,400 houses. During FY 2019, residents paid rent, utility and other household expenses of $155,337,624. In their enthusiasm, they have been anxious to share Oxford House with any recovering alcoholics and drug addicts who want to establish an Oxford House in their community. During the last days of our drinking or using drugs, most of us ceased to function as responsible individuals.

It’s designed to be a peer-run safe housing alternative only for those recovering from substance abuse. There are 41 “Oxford Houses” in Mecklenburg County, as of this writing 16 of them have vacancies. (10 for men, 6 for women) Each house is a member of the Oxford organization, but it is run independently by its residents and their elected officers.

I don’t know what my future holds but I know that I wouldn’t have gotten this far without Oxford House and the amazing family I’ve made with the people here. Oxford House is a nationally recognized network of peer-run, self-supporting sober living homes for individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. These democratically operated residences provide safe, affordable housing where residents support one another in maintaining sobriety without the use of professional staff or formal treatment programs. One of the greatest threats to the sobriety of a recovering alcoholic or drug addict is loneliness. At a time when we acquired a serious desire to stop drinking or using drugs, many of us had lost our families and friends because of our alcoholism and/or drug addiction. Too often, newly recovering alcoholics and drug addicts are faced with the necessity of living alone and of relying solely on contacts with Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous to stay sober.

There is no official minimum time limit for acceptance, but generally an individual comes into an Oxford House following a 14 to 28 day rehabilitation program, or at least a detoxification period. We’re now able to build a life together, surrounded by a support system filled with amazing people in and out of recovery. I wake up today with a grateful heart because of how far I’ve come, and I look forward to each day not with fear, but with hope. I’m very grateful for my second chance with Oxford and the amazing outreach worker who didn’t give up on me.

Each group obtains a charter from Oxford House, Inc., the umbrella organization for the national network of individual Oxford Houses. At the Oxford House World Convention held annually, Oxford Houses throughout the country vote for representatives to the World Council.
